Sawyer Johnson, a sophomore at Carlyle High School, was elected president of
Kaskaskia District Student Council, or KDSC, during the convention held Feb. 24, at Belleville
West High School.
Johnson ran unopposed for the position of KDSC president.
Despite not having an opponent, she said she took the preparation process seriously to
ensure he was ready to serve effectively.
Adilyn Diekamper, a sophomore at Carlyle High School, was elected Media Specialist of
KDSC.
Being a Media Specialist means being in charge of all the KDSC social media accounts.
To prepare for the convention, Johnson created a campaign board, wrote and practiced a
speech, and participated in interview practice sessions.
“(These actions) helped me feel confident and ready for any questions,” Johnson said.
Johnson previously served as the KDSC Media Specialist, which she said gave her
valuable experience working with the board. She also holds leadership roles in other
organizations, including FFA, and regularly attends leadership events.
“I believe I was the best candidate because of my experience on the board and my strong
public speaking and communication skills,” Johnson said, “Being involved in other clubs and
leadership activities has helped me grow as a leader.”
Johnson expressed gratitude to those who supported her throughout the process. She
thanked her fellow Student Council members and advisors
