Eighteen Carlyle High School students from Introduction to Journalism and Writing for
Publication attended the Southern Illinois School Press Association, SISPA, winter conference
on Feb. 26, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
There were 210 students in attendance from 13 different schools in the area.
Julia Rendlmen, a SIUC professor and a New York Times-published journalist, gave the
keynote address in the opening session.
During the event, students can participate in various contests to highlight their skills in
Journalism
Junior Maggie Bass placed first in Feature Writing
Senior Riley Terry placed second in Advertising Design.
Students are also able to submit work from the current school year during the best story
contest.
Junior Landry Steinkamp placed third in the Best Story Sports Spread.
Senior Addie Gansauer placed third in Best Story Yearbook Clubs Spread.
Junior Maggie Bass placed third in Best Story Academics Spread.
Students were also able to attend workshops to learn more about journalism and focus on
specific interests
“In addition to preparing for IHSA, students are able to interact with other students from
many different high schools, hear what professionals in the industry are doing, and get feedback
from journalism professors,” Carlyle adviser and SISPA co-director, Gina Shook, said.
The IHSA contest is scheduled for April 11.
